How to take Wegovy
Taking Wegovy: a step-by-step guide
1. Do a visual check
Take the lid off your Wegovy pen and make sure the liquid is clear and colourless.
2. Attach the needle
Pull back the tab on the needle and then screw it onto the pen. Remove the top sheath and inner sheath.
3. Check the flow
Dial up to the flow marker (∙ ∙). Hold the pen upright and press the button until liquid squirts out.
4. Dial up to your dose
Turn the dial until it reaches your required dose (it will lock at this setting).
5. Inject the needle
Insert the needle into the soft part of your belly. Press the button and wait for 10 seconds.
6. Wait a week and repeat
Each pen has enough for four weekly doses. It's a good idea to rotate the injection site each time.
Wegovy dosage chart
You take Wegovy once a week by injecting it yourself at home. You can take it at any time of day, with or without meals. However, it's important to take it on the same day each week.
When you first purchase Wegovy online through SemaPen or get an NHS prescription, you'll receive a 0.25mg pen with enough for four weekly doses. This is your starting dose.
Your dose increases each month until it reaches 2.4mg. This is your maintenance (maximum) dose. Most patients continue taking this dose for the duration of their treatment.
Remember that your Wegovy medication programme is a marathon, not a sprint. That's why it's important to step up the dose gradually – it takes time for your body to get used to the medication.

What are the possible side effects of Wegovy medication?
All medications can cause side effects. A side effect is any unwanted result from taking a medication.
In Wegovy clinical trials, the most common side effects were nausea and stomach problems, including tummy pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. A fair few patients also experienced headaches.
You might experience these side effects, too. However, they're typically mild and can be managed at home with simple remedies or over-the-counter drugs.
More serious side effects are rare, though they do happen from time to time.
