Learn how to store Mounjaro KwikPens safely at home or when travelling in our handy guide to storing Mounjaro.

Wondering how to store your Mounjaro medication? There are a few ground rules to remember. But with a bit of practice, you'll soon know exactly how to keep your KwikPens safe and effective.

When you start a Mounjaro prescription, you're given clear instructions with your KwikPens. These include guidelines on how best to store them. These guidelines are always the most important to follow.

We've created this guide to give you an easy overview of how to store Mounjaro at home and when travelling. However, it should never replace the manufacturer's advice. Always check the leaflet that comes with your medication or the manufacturer's website for the most accurate guidance.

Why storage matters

Mounjaro is a protein-based injectable drug that comes in multi-dose, pre-filled KwikPens. Medicines like this are sensitive to heat, cold and light. If they're not stored properly, they can break down or lose effectiveness.

That's why it's so important to follow the storage instructions carefully. By doing so, you make sure every dose of Mounjaro you take is safe and works as it should.

Storing Mounjaro at home

The safest place to keep unused Mounjaro KwikPens is in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (35.6°F to 46.4°F). You should keep them in their original carton to protect them from light.

Never freeze Mounjaro. If a pen has been frozen, do not use it.

When a pen is taken out of the fridge, it can be kept at room temperature up to 30°C (86°F) for up to 30 days. Do not use it after this time.

Once you start a KwikPen, keep it capped and away from heat and light. Never store a Kwikpen with its needle attached.

You should discard the KwikPen once you've taken the four doses and no later than 30 days after first use. You should throw it away even if there's still some medicine inside.

Travelling with Mounjaro

Starting a treatment like Mounjaro doesn't mean you need to stay at home and put your life on hold. Many people take their KwikPens to work, on short trips or even on long holidays.

Because KwikPens can remain at room temperature for up to 30 days, shorter trips are usually straightforward.

For hotter climates or longer trips, use a medical travel pouch or cool bag. Avoid placing KwikPens directly against ice.

Store KwikPens in original packaging and keep them in your hand luggage, not your checked baggage.

A bit of planning can give you confidence that your medicine will remain safe throughout your journey.

Before each use: quick checks

Before every injection, you should carry out a few simple checks:

  • Look through the inspection window – the liquid inside should be clear and colourless.
  • Do not use a KwikPen if the liquid looks cloudy or discoloured or contains floating particles.
  • Check the expiry date printed on the carton. If the date has passed, do not use the KwikPen.
  • Use a new needle each time. Remove it from the KwikPen after the injection.
  • Any expired or unused KwikPens should be disposed of safely. Your pharmacist or prescriber can explain how to return them.

Taking these small steps each time helps keep you safe and the medication effective.
