Nausea is a common side effect of Wegovy, but there are simple steps you can take to manage it. Learn how in our quick guide.

Any medication can cause side effects. With Wegovy, one of the most common side effects is nausea (feeling queasy).
Typically, this is mild and improves as your body adjusts to the medication. In the meantime, however, there are simple steps you can take to manage your nausea and feel a little more comfortable.
That's what this guide is about. We explain why Wegovy can cause nausea and share some advice for managing it at home.
Why can Wegovy cause nausea?
There are several reasons why some people experience nausea on Wegovy. The primary reason is that Wegovy slows gastric emptying, meaning it takes longer for food to leave the stomach.
This is one of the main ways that Wegovy works. Slowing gastric emptying helps you feel full for longer, which can support weight loss by preventing overeating.
However, it can also leave you feeling bloated, overfull and – sometimes – nauseous.
Tips for managing nausea at home
The NHS has some helpful suggestions for managing nausea. We've based our advice on these suggestions.
Minimise overwhelming foods
If you're already feeling sensitive, try to avoid food that is spicy, strong-smelling or very greasy. Instead, opt for milder flavours and fresh or raw options that are a bit gentler.
Ditch large meals for smaller, more frequent portions
A big, heavy meal can leave you feeling overfull and make nausea worse.
Eating smaller, more frequent portions means your stomach has less to work through at once. However, because you're eating frequently, you're less likely to get hungry.
Chew slowly and thoroughly
Try to slow the pace of eating. This will also give you more time to chew thoroughly, which can support digestion.
Be aware of your posture when eating
Hunching over can restrict the stomach, so try to sit up while eating.
Sitting at a table to eat is the easiest way to maintain a good posture. In case you can't sit at a table, using a cushion can help.

After eating, try to remain upright for a short period to help promote smooth, effective digestion.
Get fresh air
Open a window or nip outside for a few deep breaths. Whether it's the cool air or the oxygen, this often helps improve nausea symptoms.
Many people also find that it's best to avoid areas with overpowering smells, such as perfumes or cleaning chemicals.
Take care with drinking
Liquid also takes up space in your stomach, so try to separate drinks from mealtimes. That way, you're not adding more stress to your stomach without meaning to.
Certain drinks are more likely to cause nausea. That includes carbonated fizzy drinks, caffeine and alcohol.
That said, there are several drinks that can actively manage nausea:
- Sipping cold water can be soothing.
- Peppermint and ginger teas are known nausea remedies. If you don't want to drink tea, you can try small snacks that contain these ingredients, such as mints or a ginger biscuit.
Be aware of dehydration
It's easy to forget to drink when you're busy. However, dehydration can cause or worsen nausea, as well as being generally bad for you.
You can help boost your fluid intake with cool drinks or fruits and vegetables with a high water content. Cucumbers and melons are good for this.
Good hydration is especially important if nausea leads to you actually being sick. Vomiting can quickly cause dehydration. As a result, you might feel nauseous again – and suddenly you're locked in an uncomfortable cycle.
Nausea is one of the most common side effects of Wegovy, and it typically gets better on its own. However, if following these steps doesn't help, or you start feeling worse rather than better, reach out to your healthcare team for advice.
