If you're considering Wegovy for weight loss, you may be wondering whether it affects your contraception. And you may have already read that Mounjaro – a similar weight loss medication – can reduce the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill.

The good news is that Wegovy appears to be different. Current evidence suggests it does not significantly affect the absorption or effectiveness of oral contraceptives. That means most people can continue taking their usual contraceptive pill without additional precautions.

Here's what you need to know.

Does Wegovy affect the contraceptive pill?

Like other GLP-1 medications, Wegovy can slow stomach emptying. This can potentially affect how some medications taken by mouth are absorbed.

With Mounjaro, this effect is strong enough to reduce the amount of some oral contraceptive hormones that reach the bloodstream. However, researchers haven't found the same effect with Wegovy.

While Wegovy might make a small difference, this difference isn't clinically meaningful.¹ In other words, it isn't expected to have enough of an effect to reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill.

This is one of the key differences between Wegovy and Mounjaro.

What's different with Mounjaro?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, which acts on GLP-1 hormone receptors. This has several effects, including slowing stomach emptying.

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors and can slow stomach emptying to a greater extent. This is particularly the case when treatment is first started or after a dose increase.

As a result, people taking Mounjaro are advised to use additional contraception for four weeks after starting treatment and for four weeks after each dose increase.

This recommendation does not apply to Wegovy.

Can I keep taking my pill?

In most cases, yes.

If you're taking either the combined oral contraceptive pill or the progestogen-only pill, you can usually continue taking it as normal when starting Wegovy.

There's generally no need to switch contraceptive methods solely because you've begun semaglutide treatment. However, it's always important that your prescriber is aware of any medications you're taking so they can consider your health and circumstances as a whole.

What if Wegovy makes me vomit?

Although Wegovy isn't known to reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill directly, side effects can sometimes create a separate issue.

Nausea and vomiting are relatively common side effects, particularly at the start of treatment. If you vomit within two to three hours of taking your contraceptive pill, your body may not have had enough time to absorb it properly.

In that situation, you should follow the missed pill guidance that comes with your contraceptive medication.

The same applies if you experience severe or prolonged diarrhoea, which can also affect absorption.

Can I take Wegovy while trying for a baby?

No. Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.

Current guidance advises stopping Wegovy at least two months before a planned pregnancy.² This allows enough time for the medication to leave your system before conception.

If you become pregnant while taking Wegovy, contact your healthcare provider for advice as soon as possible.

What about breastfeeding?

Wegovy is also not recommended while breastfeeding.

At the moment, there isn't enough evidence to know if semaglutide passes into breast milk, or what effect it might have on a breastfed baby. For that reason, healthcare professionals generally advise waiting until breastfeeding has finished before starting treatment.

If you're breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, your prescriber can help you understand the available options and decide what is most appropriate for you.

H3: Starting Wegovy safely

While Wegovy is not currently thought to reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, it's still important to let your prescriber know which contraceptive method you use.

Before prescribing Wegovy, a responsible provider will complete a full medical assessment, including your current medications, medical history and future pregnancy plans.

At Semapen, this assessment helps ensure that Wegovy is both safe and appropriate for your individual circumstances.

If another treatment or additional advice would better suit your needs, your clinical team can explain your options and support you in making an informed decision.
