Thinking about pausing or recommencing weight loss injections? Learn what happens, when it's appropriate, and why medical guidance matters.

Life doesn't always go according to plan.

There are many reasons why you might have to pause your Wegovy or Mounjaro treatment. You may be going on holiday, having surgery, planning a pregnancy or finding it hard to tolerate side effects. Or perhaps you're simply wondering whether you still need your medication because you've reached a weight loss goal or have built sustainable habits.

Whatever the reason, here's what you need to know before stopping or restarting treatment.

Can you stop taking weight loss injections?

Of course. While weight loss injections often work best when taken long term, there's no requirement to stay on Wegovy or Mounjaro forever.

What's more, there are several situations where stopping treatment may be the best option. For example, your clinician may recommend stopping if you:

  • Become pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy
  • Need surgery or another medical procedure
  • Develop a health condition that makes treatment unsuitable
  • Decide, together with your clinician, that another approach would be more appropriate

Some people also choose to stop after achieving their target weight. However, this decision should be made with medical guidance and support.

What happens when you stop?

When you stop taking Wegovy or Mounjaro, the medication gradually leaves your body. As it does, its effects begin to wear off.

For many people, this means appetite gradually returns to its previous level. You may notice increased hunger, less fullness after meals and increased cravings. You might also start eating larger portion sizes.

That doesn't mean you've done anything wrong. These medications work by helping regulate the hormones involved in appetite and fullness. When treatment stops, those hormonal effects naturally reduce.

For some people, maintaining healthy habits developed during treatment is enough to continue managing their weight successfully.

Others may find that weight gradually begins to increase again.

Will you regain the weight?

Picture of someone measuring themselves.

Not everyone regains weight after stopping treatment, but it's quite common.

Weight management is influenced by a complex combination of biology, behaviour, environment and lifestyle.

GLP-1 medications help make maintaining a calorie deficit easier by reducing hunger and increasing satiety. Without that additional support, some people find it harder to maintain the same eating habits.

That's one reason obesity is increasingly recognised as a complex, long-term health condition rather than something that can always be 'fixed' with short-term treatment.

Stopping medication doesn't negate the lifestyle changes you've made. However, it may remove one of the tools that helped make those changes easier to sustain.

Can you restart later?

The answer is usually yes, but it's not usually as simple as picking up where you left off.

Prescription weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro affect appetite, digestion and metabolism over time. If treatment is interrupted or you've had a significant break, your body may no longer be accustomed to the medication.

Because of this, your prescriber will likely recommend restarting more gradually, rather than returning straight to your previous dose. This is crucial for helping your body to readjust and reduce any gastrointestinal side effects.

Exactly how treatment is restarted depends on several factors, including:

  • Any medications you're taking
  • How long you've been off treatment
  • Your previous dose
  • Your overall health
  • Any previous side effects

Why consistency often produces the best results

One of the key messages from clinical research into weight loss medications is that they're designed to support long-term weight management.

In clinical trials:

  • Participants taking tirzepatide (Mounjaro) lost an average of 21% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks.¹
  • Participants taking semaglutide (Wegovy) lost an average of 15% over 68 weeks.²

You'll notice that these studies followed participants for well over a year. They weren't designed around short bursts of treatment followed by repeated stops and starts.

That doesn't mean treatment should always continue regardless of personal circumstances. However, it does suggest that consistent use alongside healthy lifestyle changes is more likely to support sustained weight loss than frequently stopping and restarting.

When might a planned pause be necessary?

Sometimes pausing treatment is the safest option.

Here are some examples of when that might be the case.

Pregnancy and trying to conceive

Any weight loss programme, medical or otherwise, should be avoided during pregnancy. Weight loss medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro should not be used by women and birthing people during pregnancy or when trying to conceive.

Your prescriber will advise stopping treatment before trying to conceive and avoiding these medications throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. That's why it's important to let them know if you're planning to get pregnant.

Surgery

Some people are advised to stop weight loss injections before surgery because delayed stomach emptying may increase the risk of complications during procedures requiring anaesthesia.

Your surgical team will tell you if this applies to you.

Side effects

If side effects become severe or persistent, your clinician may recommend temporarily stopping treatment while they assess the situation.

In some cases, restarting later at a lower dose may make it easier to tolerate side effects.

Don't let one difficult week derail you

It's important to remember that weight loss is rarely a perfectly smooth, linear journey.

It's normal for many people to experience temporary plateaus, slow progress, occasional weight gain or periods where motivation dips.

Experiences like these don't necessarily mean the medication has stopped working.

Sometimes the best approach is to review your nutrition, activity levels and expectations with your prescribing clinician, rather than stopping treatment altogether.

That's one reason why ongoing clinical support is so important, whether you're starting treatment, continuing it or considering stopping.
