Is there a secret to maximising weight loss on Mounjaro? Follow our step-by-step guide for straight facts and evidence-based tips.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)is one of the most effective weight loss medications currently available.

In a clinical trial, people living with obesity who used tirzepatide lost an average of 21% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks.¹

That figure is impressive, but it can also lead to some misunderstanding about how the medication works. Despite what some may have said, Mounjaro doesn't 'melt away fat' – and it isn't a substitute for healthy habits.

So, let's clear up the myths. What isthe best way to lose weight on Mounjaro?

The honest answer? It's the same way you'd lose weight without it. That means consistent calorie reduction, balanced nutrition and movement. But with Mounjaro, you're supported by better appetite control and blood sugar regulation.

Let's get into it.

How Mounjaro actually works

Tirzepatide works by mimicking two natural hormones involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation: GLP-1 and GIP.

These helpful hormones are involved in several bodily functions, including:

  • Slowing down digestion
  • Increasing feelings of fullness
  • Reducing hunger
  • Improving blood sugar control

As a result, many people on the medication find they feel satisfied with smaller portions. Cravings often reduce. Snacking becomes less frequent.

So, the weight loss happens because you eat fewer calories over time – not because the medication burns fat.

Understanding this is important. Mounjaro supports weight loss, but it doesn't replace the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle. Here's how you can maximise its impact in the safest, most sustainable way.

Step 1: focus on protein and nutrient density

Because appetite decreases on Mounjaro, you may naturally eat less. That makes your food choices even more important. You should prioritise:

  • Lean protein like chicken, fish, eggs, tofu and Greek yoghurt
  • Fibre-rich vegetables like sweet potato, broccoli and leafy greens
  • Whole grains like brown rice, oats, whole wheat and quinoa
  • Healthy fats in moderation, like oily fish, nuts and seeds, and avocado

Protein is particularly important. That's because proteins are the building blocks that help preserve your muscle mass during weight loss, keeping you feeling full and helping you stay strong.

When portion sizes shrink, every bite needs to work harder to support you nutritionally.

Step 2: eat slowly and stop when satisfied

Mounjaro slows gastric emptying, which means food stays in your stomach for longer.

Picture of a person eating a healthy, balanced dish.

That makes it really important to be mindful of how quickly you're clearing your plate. Eating too fast or ignoring fullness signals can lead to uncomfortable bloating, indigestion and nausea.

Eating slowly, chewing thoroughly and pausing between bites helps your body adjust and ensures you stay feeling comfortable.

Many people find that smaller, balanced meals feel more manageable than large ones.

3: manage side effects properly

Common side effects of tirzepatide include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Mild abdominal discomfort

These are usually temporary and often improve as your body adapts to the medication.

You can help reduce discomfort by:

  • Avoiding fatty or fried foods
  • Limiting alcohol, or even better, cut it out altogether
  • Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water or low-sugar squash
  • Gradually increasing your fibre intake
  • Eating smaller portions

If symptoms are persistent or severe, seek medical advice. If you're a Semapen subscriber, you can always reach out to our team through WhatsApp or the SemaPen app.

The list above isn't exhaustive. To learn more about side effects, read our guide or refer to the manufacturer's advice.

Step 4: increase activity (realistically)

Don't worry – you don't need to suddenly adopt a high-intensity gym routine.

However, incorporating some resistance training and regular movement can:

  • Protect your muscle mass
  • Support your metabolism
  • Improve long-term weight maintenance
  • Improve your mental well-being

You can make a meaningful difference with some low-impact activity, like going for a daily walk or a gentle bike ride.

Even resistance training doesn't require weights and a squat rack. You can engage your core and other muscles through simple daily tasks like:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the lift
  • Carrying the shopping back from the supermarket instead of having it delivered
  • Gardening
  • Household chores like vacuuming, mopping and doing the laundry

The key thing is to make an effort to move more. With time, you may find that physical activity feels easier and the idea of a proper workout feels less intimidating.

Step 5: follow the dose escalation properly

Each Mounjaro injection pen contains four weekly doses. After completing one pen, your dose typically increases, gradually moving toward a maintenance dose. This step-based approach helps minimise side effects and allows your body to adapt.

Skipping steps or increasing the dose too quickly will not necessarily accelerate your weight loss. Instead, it may increase side effects and disrupt your treatment.

Patience is the key to better long-term results.

Step 6: think long-term, not short-term

Remember that in the main Mounjaro clinical trial, participants lost an average of 21% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks.¹

While impressive, this is still more than a year.

Sustainable weight loss is worth the time it takes. Mounjaro is most effective when used as part of a structured programme that includes ongoing medical support, nutritional guidance and monitoring of progress.

Rapid weight loss is often not better. Losing weight too quickly can increase the risk of muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies or gallstones.

What about Wegovy?

Wegovy (semaglutide) works in a similar way to Mounjaro. However, it only targets GLP-1, rather than both GLP-1 and GIP.

In a clinical trial, people using semaglutide lost an average of 15% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks.²

Both medications are effective. Tirzepatide has shown greater average weight reduction in studies, but the best option depends on your individual needs, budget and medical advice.

Who can get Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is only available on prescription.

When prescribed privately in the UK, it's typically available to adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, following a medical assessment. (If you have an obesity-related health condition, it can be prescribed at a BMI of 27 or greater.)

With Semapen, your assessment begins with a digital consultation in the Semapen app. If prescribed, you'll receive ongoing medical support, not just medication.

That's the Semapen difference. Our subscribers get tailored support from a team of real obesity specialists, including doctors, nurses, dietitians and psychologists. Our advice isn't just about the best way to take Mounjaro – we focus on the big picture to help you learn healthy lifelong habits.

Mythbusting

The biggest myth about Mounjaro is that it does the work for you – it doesn't. However, for many people, it does make the work more achievable.

By reducing hunger and stabilising appetite, it creates a window of opportunity. That window enables you to make consistent food choices, build sustainable habits, reduce emotional eating and maintain calorie control without back-and-forth struggles.

Medication and behaviour work together. With the right structure and medical supervision, tirzepatide can be a powerful tool to support you on your way to a happy, healthy lifestyle.
