Why you can't buy retatrutide online: fakes, scams and dangers

Retatrutide is an experimental weight loss drug that's not approved for treatment anywhere. So, why are websites offering it for sale in 2026?

Retatrutide has a lot of people talking.

This injectable weight loss drug works similarly to approved prescription medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro. But one big difference is that it appears to be even more effective.

As of September 2026, retatrutide is undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials. While the full results of those trials are yet to be published, pre-release data indicate an average weight loss of around 28%.¹

That's a much higher average than Wegovy (15%)² and even Mounjaro (21%).³ In fact, it's more in line with the expected weight loss after bariatric surgery.

As you might imagine, the promise of a surgery-grade weight loss treatment without the need for surgery has seen demand for the drug skyrocket.

And, indeed, you may see retatrutide for sale online, as websites and social media sellers flock to take advantage of this demand.

But are these sales legitimate? Will you really get the medication you pay for?

The answers are 'no' and 'probably not'. And more to the point, buying retatrutide in 2026 can be very dangerous.

Here's why.

Why can't you buy retatrutide online in 2026?

Retatrutide is an experimental drug. It's not approved for sale in the UK, USA or anywhere else. And it won't be until Phase 3 trial results are published and regulatory bodies have evaluated the drug to make sure it's safe and effective.

As of now, any retatrutide offered for sale online is unlicensed, unregulated and possibly fake. Selling unlicensed retatrutide is against the law in most countries, and buying it is a health gamble that's not worth taking.

However, that hasn't stopped unscrupulous sellers trying to make a quick buck. In August 2026, retatrutide manufacturer Eli Lilly and Company sued six companies over alleged illegal sales of the medication.⁴

What will you get if you buy unlicensed retatrutide?

It's impossible to know for sure.

Because the drug is unapproved, sales are entirely unregulated. Illegal sellers can – and do – try to pass anything off as genuine retatrutide.

One possibility is that it's an outright scam. The seller might take your money and run, leaving you with nothing but a lighter wallet.

If you do receive a product, it might:

Contain a different active ingredient
Contain the wrong amount of the active ingredient
Contain contaminants or impurities
Be produced without appropriate pharmaceutical controls

These aren't scare stories. Earlier this month, Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) tested a sample of so-called 'retatrutide' that turned out to contain no retatrutide whatsoever.

In fact, it contained semaglutide – the active ingredient in Wegovy. And the dose of semaglutide found was around eight times higher than usual.

The TGA's warning was stark: '"retatrutide" products marketed for weight loss may pose a serious risk to your health and should not be used'.⁵

What are the risks of buying unlicensed retatrutide?

The scary thing is that we just don't know.

That's the problem with unlicensed and unregulated medications. You don't know what's in them or how they were made, so injecting them into your body is highly risky.

You might end up taking a different drug labelled as retatrutide. That drug might be unsuitable for you, or contain a higher dose than is usually considered safe.

Similarly, if it does contain retatrutide, you have no way of knowing how much retatrutide you're taking. And even if it's a safe dose, there's no guarantee it was made or stored to proper pharmaceutical standards.

When you don't know the facts, taking unlicensed medications is just too much of a gamble.

Aren't unlicensed drugs legal in some circumstances?

Yes. In UK medicine, there are circumstances where clinicians can legally prescribe specially manufactured unlicensed medications. These are often referred to as 'compounded medications'.

However, that's not what's happening with retatrutide.

Legitimate compounded drugs are specially made versions of approved medications. Retatrutide is unapproved and can't be legally sold or prescribed by anyone, whether they're a clinician or not.

Why is fake retatrutide appearing now?

People are understandably excited about retatrutide. Eli Lilly's clinical trial data has been very impressive, feeding anticipation for the 'next big thing' in weight loss medication.

Meanwhile, the press has amplified this hype. Outlets have reported on retatrutide using terms like 'the "Godzilla" fat jab' (The Times) and 'the most powerful weight loss drug ever tested' (BBC).

And unfortunately, where demand exists, sellers will move to exploit it – whether it's legal or not.

This isn't a cottage industry, either. In May 2026, the UK's drug regulator seized around 12,000 doses of unlicensed weight loss drugs, including purported retatrutide.⁶

When will retatrutide be available in the UK?

Retatrutide will not be offered for sale legitimately until clinical trials have concluded and results are published to confirm the drug is safe.

And that's just the first stage. UK regulators must conduct their own assessments before approving retatrutide and making recommendations for treatment.

So, as of now, we don't know when – or even if – retatrutide will be approved for sale in the UK. Some outlets have suggested a 2027 or 2028 launch window, but these claims are purely speculative.
