The Mounjaro KwikPen is changing. Learn what this means for you and what to look out for as a patient in the UK.

Mounjaro's manufacturer, Eli Lilly, has announced changes to its KwikPen¹ – the medical device used to inject the medication.

The most important thing to know is that these changes don't affect how you use the KwikPen. Nor do they change your dose or affect the medication in any way. However, you may notice that the KwikPen looks slightly different when you start receiving the new version.

Let's take a closer look at these changes and what they mean for you.

Mounjaro KwikPen changes: the key facts

  • Mounjaro KwikPens have received a design update.
  • The changes don't affect your Mounjaro doses, how you take your injections or how the medication works.
  • The main purpose of the changes is to reduce leftover medication in the KwikPen.
  • You might notice a few visual differences when you start receiving the new KwikPens.
  • You could start receiving the new version as early as this month (April 2026).

Why are Mounjaro KwikPens changing?

If you take Mounjaro for weight loss or type 2 diabetes, you'll be very familiar with the KwikPen and how it works.

Each KwikPen comes loaded with four doses – one for each week of the month. It's designed to measure each dose accurately with each weekly injection, so you can be sure you're injecting just the right amount.

However, you may have noticed that there's sometimes a little bit of medication left over. Some people call this leftover medication 'the magic dose'. However, it's not safe to take this 'magic dose'. It's there to make sure you always have enough medication to cover four doses, even after priming the KwikPen (squirting some liquid out).

Now, with these design changes, that so-called 'magic dose' will do its own vanishing trick. That's because the changes are meant to:

  • Reduce the amount of liquid left in the device after taking four doses
  • Make it easier for you to track that you've taken all four doses

However, that doesn't change how you use the pen at all. You should still follow the same instructions and take four doses each month as usual.

Apart from the disappearing 'magic dose', the only other things you might notice are a few small differences in how the KwikPens look.

How does the new KwikPen look different?

The design changes are very subtle, but it's worth knowing about them so you can be confident you've received the genuine article.

Compared to the old design, the new KwikPen has a different:

  • Plunger design: Eli Lilly has added a new component that extends the length of the internal plunger.
  • Plunger position: before you use the KwikPen, the plunger will sit further down inside the cartridge. When you've used all 4 doses, it will sit close to the end of the pen. That makes it easier to tell when the pen is used up and should be discarded.

When should I start looking out for the new KwikPen?

Some UK pharmacies will start stocking the new KwikPen this month (April 2026). However, that doesn't mean you'll receive the new design straight away. That's because pharmacies will use up their existing stock before sending out the new pen.

What's important to know is that both versions will be on the market for some time. So, if you receive different designs from month to month, that's nothing to worry about. It will likely be this way until the old stock is finally used up.
